Breaking the Habit of Dismissing Innovation
How many times have you heard someone say “Cannot” in response to a new idea? It’s a habit that many of us encounter far too often. You present an innovative suggestion, a fresh perspective, or even a potential solution to a longstanding problem, only to be met with an immediate shutdown: “Cannot.”
This reflexive negativity doesn’t just stifle creativity; it blocks progress. It’s an unhealthy mindset that dampens motivation, shuts down innovation, and keeps us in a loop of inaction.
Instead of exploring possibilities, we find ourselves expending energy on identifying obstacles, hunting for reasons why something won’t work, rather than imagining ways it could.

But what if we flipped this response? What if, instead of “Cannot,” we approached every idea, no matter how radical or unconventional, with an attitude of “How can we make this work?”
Dear Managers, behaviours are contagious. Are yours worth catching? If you’re the one saying “Cannot” every time an idea surfaces, that negativity will ripple through your teams.
However, if you model curiosity, optimism, and a willingness to explore possibilities, your team will follow suit. Leadership starts with mindset. If we expect innovation from our teams, we must first demonstrate it in our own actions.
Here’s the truth: not every idea will be brilliant at first. Some might seem impractical or even a little crazy. But the most powerful innovations often start as ideas that are deemed too far-fetched.
The magic happens when we take those initial “stupid” ideas and turn them into workable solutions.
This shift in mindset is where real transformation begins. By encouraging open-mindedness and persistence, we foster an environment where creativity thrives, and challenges are seen as opportunities for growth – not dead-ends.

Let’s break the “Cannot” habit. Let’s embrace the mindset of possibility. Because when we replace “Cannot” with “Let’s try,” we not only open the door to innovation—we create a space where anything is possible.
