In short, competencies are the skills, knowledge and behaviours that lead to successful performance. In summary, core competencies, leadership competencies and functional competencies make a complete set of competencies, a competency framework, for any organisation. Additionally, functional competency profiles consist of generalist and professional tracks.
For each competency there is a description of what it means in practice and required performance standard by job level. The competencies are intended to be discrete and cumulative.
With each level building on the levels below i.e. a person demonstrating a competency at level 3 should be demonstrating levels 1 and 2 as a matter of course. Hence, these indicators of behaviour provide a clear sense of and greater understanding and consistency about what is expected from individuals in an organisation.
Firstly, core competencies are critical behaviours incapsulating an organisation’s mission, vision, values and strategic priorities. That is to say, all members of an organisation need to show the appropriate behaviour. For example, typical core competencies are integrity, teamwork, professionalism, openness to change and others.
Secondly, leadership competencies are critical behaviours anyone holding managerial or leadership positions in an organisation should adhere to.
Lastly, functional Competencies include the “know-how” expected of every officer or position holder. Therefore, they usually describe the behaviour indicators, job knowledge and technical skills that officers require to perform their daily roles efficiently and effectively.
In other words, this deck of leadership competency development options should aid any person, at any organisation, with management responsibility. Therefore, it includes a broad range of leadership competencies that help leaders perform in their roles of developing self and others.
In the following, some of our leadership development cards are shown as examples. First, the leadership competency “Being Analytical”.
Next, we display leadership competency cards for “Adaptability” and “People Development”.
These competencies are a result of our work with various public and private organisations and contain some of the most essential competencies needed today.
In conclusion, these more than 100 competencies and development options will help anyone who has recognised a specific developmental need and wishes to improve themselves.
